The Targa Florio took place on the Island of Sicily, on the 45-mile Piccolo Madonie circuit. Famously in 1973, one of the underdogs – a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR driven by Herbert Muller and Gijs van Lennep – enjoyed victory over big boys Ferrari and Alfa Romeo after their faster, meaner factory prototypes dropped out through unrealibilty.
