This painting celebrates the very first Richmond Trophy race at the 1998 Goodwood Revival, fought out by front-engined 2.5 litre Formula One cars from 1954 to 1960. Heading into the chicane are the 1960 Ferrari 246 Dinos of Tony Merrick and Robin Lodge, chasing Nigel Corner in his 1957 Maserati 250F Lightweight. While Nigel was forced to retire on lap 11, Tony and Robin came in 5th and 7th.

Raced between 1958 and 1960, the 246 2.4 was the first V6-engined car to achieve an F1 win – at the French GP in Reims in 1958; it was drivenby Mike Hawthorn, who subsequently took the championship that year. At Monza in 1960, it became the last front-engined car to win an F1 race.
